Myth 3: Congregations in growing communities are more likely to grow than those in stable areas.

Congregations that expect local population growth to automatically increase their numerical membership often experience disappointment

  • 35% of numerically declining congregations are located in growing-population areas.
  • 24% of numerically plateaued congregations are located in growing-population areas.
  • 38% of numerically growing congregations are located in growing-population areas.

At least a dozen factors fuel the numerical growth of congregations and predict their numerical decline.  A few are community factors other than population growth.  Most are dynamics internal to the congregation—how worshipers experience and connect with their congregations.
